The World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) was launched
as a program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2007
with a mission of establishing in Japan globally-open research centers that attract and team together
frontline researchers, having environments that interconnect research domains and overarch national borders
while transcending languages and systems.
The WPI Forum features the groundbreaking activities and initiatives of the WPI centers and their host institutions
located throughout Japan. In addition, the Forum provides a platform for other Japanese universities and
research institutions to share information on the wealth of their amassed experience and know-how, including on
ways that they have devised to attract excellent researchers from overseas to their campuses.
