Global Research Hubs in Japan: Bringing Together Top Researchers Beyond Fields, Nations, Languages, and Institutional Barriers

The World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) was launched in FY2007 as a program of the Japan‘s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
WPI aims to establish “globally visible research centers” in Japan—centers that offer outstanding research environments, achieve the highest levels of research excellence, and attract large numbers of top researchers from around the world.
WPI centers, established under the WPI program, receive significant financial support from MEXT along with continuous follow-up advice from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) on both science and management. Through this, they have developed and become widely recognized as world-leading research institutes. At these centers, top-tier researchers and support staff from across the globe come together to continuously pursue new frontiers in basic research.

Program scale and outcome indicators are presented in “Key Figures of WPI.
